1. "Open Mic" does not equal Karaoke...
    Don't show up expecting to play a tape and follow the bouncing ball; be sure
    to memorize something and/or bring an instrument.

2.  Find out what's appropriate before you sign up...
    If you mistakenly sign up and then find out what you do would be
    inappropriate, be polite and take your name off the list.

3.  Don't bring a whole band...
    Unless you know it is welcome. Most "open mic" sessions are set up for
    acoustic soloists. Bands are loud and take time to set up; be considerate. At
    the very least, offer to go on last.

4.  Ask your pianist...
    If you are singing and require accompaniment, make sure that your musician
    knows the material you are wanting to sing, if not, sing something they do
    know... or meet with them ahead of time to rehearse.... NOBODY likes to be
    put on the spot !

5.  Be nice !
    Most of the people who do "open mic" are not professional musicians. They're
    performing for the love of it. They don't have the hardened ego defenses of a
    professional, and it's not fair to heckle them. Some people are just going to
    suck. Live with it ... "open mic" is free, and you get what you pay for.
    Besides, if you're so great, why aren't you on your world tour... instead of at
    an "open mic" session?!

What is "open mic" ?

"Open mic" is an opportunity for anyone to perform. Most "open mic" forums are for
vocalists and musicians, although some are for comedy or poetry readings. "open
mic" sessions can usually be found in piano lounges, some are in clubs, cafés, or
book stores. Common places are at private parties such as wedding receptions and
cocktail parties and within piano bars.
